The Sands of Marinarus 6

Wilcox looked almost amused as the three younger men sat in front of hisimpressive desk. He noticed the bruises on the faces of both McMaster and Kal. He remarked, “I see you two have become well acquainted. I’d be a little careful of the Sergeant Major Kal. He’s a top notch commando and he’s coming along to protect your ass.” Kal grinned, “I’ve already been apprised of that situation sir. Jack hasa damned good right upper cut.” Everyone laughed and with the ice broken the general got down tobusiness. “In brief gentlemen we’re trying to get an effective teleportation system set up in New Zion in the near future. This project has the highest priority security restrictions. It means you are to kill yourself rather than permit unauthorized persons from obtaining any information about the computer, receptor or transmission device. We’re walking into new ground and we don’t want this falling into the wrong hands. If I had the smallest suspicion about your honesty and loyalty you wouldn’t leave this room alive do you understand? Am I getting through?” Kal replied, “I believe we understand the importance and gravity of thismission.” “Excellent! However there’s more. There’s an old term called the loosecannon. In this case I’m talking about the mysterious commander of New Zion. We’ve found out some rather disturbing information about this Edward Spencer, thanks to Kal’s preliminary investigations.” Kal leaned forward in his chair and the other two were giving thegeneral their undivided attention. The older man continued, “It seems that Colonel Spencer went through a lot of trouble to falsify his birth records. Oh he was very clever. He not only gained access to an extremely secure government record storage area but he manipulated the operating system in such a way as to circumvent the security walls. He also assigned himself a security number and fake high school transcripts. In fact that’s what gave us the first clue, the fact that nobody had any recollection of a brilliant student by the name of Edward Spencer in the small English town of Tumbridge Wells. As a matter of record he did earn his credentials in the military and the officer-training course at Sand Hurst. Once we discovered that this Edward Spencer wasn’t exactly what he claimed, we delved much further. This report represents thousands of man hours and a lot of digging through dusty archives, I can tell you. We accessed DNA records of this mister Spencer from the 2050 database and it turns out that he’s definitely the same person that rules the roost in New Zion. The nearly hundred year old sample was a dead ringer for the sample we have for him from thirty years ago.” He saw the mystification and disbelief on their faces. “That’s nothing;it’s far more dramatic than that. Of course we have samples of his signature on certain documents that he had to sign when he joined the space service. I must say Sergeant McMaster that it was a bitch to convince your security to allow us to obtain information on this Edward Spencer. You should take pride in your organization. I was impressed with their exceptional security precautions.” The Scot grunted, “Thank you sir, you never can be too careful thesedays.” The senior officer chuckled, “Don’t I know it. Anyway we tracked himdown to yet another fake birth certificate and security number. A handwriting expert was able to verify that signatures from documents dated 2021 were Spencer’s. That’s when he entered the royal navy as a submariner. According to all his academic records that we found from five different universities over a period of nearly ninety years he’s accumulated knowledge in nuclear physics, astrophysics, space exploration, advanced mathematics, economics, chemistry and astronomy. He either got majors or masters degrees in these fields with very high grades. As near as we can determine he actually earned them honestly. We found several research papers in long antiquated files and those documents clearly show that the author had a thorough grasp of the… Read the rest of The Sands of Marinarus 6
